What Is the Former Otani Family Residence Main House?
The Former Otani Family Residence Main House (旧大谷家住宅主屋, Kyū Ōtani-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) is a two-story timber house built in 1935 in Mizuochi, Oyabe City, Toyama Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (Building) on 26 March 2015. It was altered in 1945.
This is the core of the estate that businessman Otani Yonetaro rebuilt on the site of his birthplace. With a building area of 244 m², it is by far the largest of the seven registered structures on the property, which also include a barn, work barn, bathhouse, ash hut, front gate and wall.
Why It Was Registered
The Former Otani Family Residence Main House faces southeast. It is a gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) building roofed with interlocking pantiles (Sangawara-buki), and the entrance sits under the gable end (Tsumairi). The main block measures 4.5 Ken across the front and 7 ken deep, so the house reads as deeper than it is wide.
A lean-to Geya 1 ken wide wraps three sides, and at the northwest corner a detached-style Zashiki reception wing and other rooms were attached later. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the building as an Azumadachi house, the formal farmhouse type of the Tonami area, with an exterior befitting a leading local residence.
Inside, the rooms are laid out in three parallel rows, finished with carefully chosen timber. The registration criterion is contribution to the historic landscape: a tall gable turned toward the southeast, standing over open rice fields, is exactly the kind of silhouette that defines this part of Toyama.
Reading the Gable and the Rooms
Start in front of the Former Otani Family Residence Main House and look up at the gable. Between the two great tiled roof slopes, short posts, tie beams and cross beams form a grid, and each panel is filled with white Shikkui plaster. The contrast of dark timber and white wall is sharpest on a clear morning, when light from the east falls across the gable.
Below the gable, the eave of the lean-to runs in one straight horizontal line. The triangle of the main roof sitting over that level eave gives the Azumadachi house its layered, heavy presence.
Inside, the museum displays folk material under the themes of rural life and everyday life in the past. As you move through the exhibits, watch how the three rows of rooms connect and notice the quality of the posts and horizontal members. Ōtani-ke Shuoku borrows a farmhouse form, but it was built with the finish of a wealthy family home.
Visiting the Main House
The Former Otani Family Residence Main House is the museum's main exhibition building, and paying the admission fee gives you access to the interior. It is one of the few structures on the estate you can actually walk through.
To frame the whole gable in one view, stand just inside the front gate or on the road outside it. The later reception wing lies at the back of the site, so walk around the side of the house to see it.
Oyabe City's official pages do not state a photography policy for the exhibits or the building, so ask at the reception desk before taking pictures. The main house is sometimes used for events such as the autumn tea gathering.
