What Is the Former Otani Family Residence Wall?
The Former Otani Family Residence Wall (旧大谷家住宅塀, Kyū Ōtani-ke Jūtaku Hei) is a timber wall built in 1961 in Mizuochi, Oyabe City, Toyama Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (Building) on 26 March 2015. It runs for 153 m in total and is capped with pantiles (Sangawara-buki).
It extends from both sides of the front gate along the south side of the estate, then turns to enclose the east and north sides. Built in the same year as the gate, it completes the outer edge of the property.
One Wall, Two Levels of Finish
The Former Otani Family Residence Wall is not built the same way all round. The south stretch on either side of the gate has posts set 6 shaku (about 1.8 m) apart, while the east and north stretches use a slightly tighter spacing of 5 shaku 5 sun (about 1.7 m).
The south wall stands on a base of large rounded boulders laid in two courses. Its face is yamato-bari, vertical boards fixed alternately front and back, and a transom of mushikui-ita, boards with irregular worm-eaten openings, runs along the top. The east and north walls are kept plain. The side the public sees received the care; the sides and back were built for use.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a typical wall of this district that sits well in the farming landscape. It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape: the tiled line of Ōtani-ke Hei draws the outline of the estate across the rice fields.
Boulder Footing and Worm-Eaten Boards
Begin at the foot of the south stretch of the Former Otani Family Residence Wall. Big, rounded boulders sit in two courses, and the timber wall rises from them; the joint between stone and wood forms a clean horizontal line.
Because the yamato-bari boards alternate in and out, a sideways view shows an even rhythm of vertical shadows. Along the top, the worm-eaten boards break that regular pattern with softer, irregular holes.
Turn the corner onto the east side and the change is obvious: simpler boarding and slightly closer posts. Walking the full 153 m along the south, east and north sides is the best way to understand how the estate treated its public front and its working sides differently.
Visiting the Wall
The south face of the Former Otani Family Residence Wall can be seen from the road in front of the gate, even before entering the museum. That is also the best place to study the boulder footing and the boarding.
The east and north stretches form the outer boundary, so you either walk around outside or view their inner faces from the grounds. In places the outside borders farmland or private land, so make sure you are somewhere you are allowed to walk.
