What the Shitennoji Temple Middle Gate Is
The Shitennoji Temple Middle Gate (四天王寺中門) is a steel-reinforced concrete gate of 1963 closing the south end of the walled central precinct of Shitennoji Temple in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City, and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 29 June 2022. It is a gate 3 bays wide with 1 doorway, carried on eight posts, roofed in the irimoya hipped-and-gabled form with a stepped tile covering, and it occupies 86 square metres.
Because guardian figures stand in the side bays, the building is also known as the Nio Gate. Naraen Kongo Rikishi occupies the east bay and Misshaku Kongo Rikishi the west; both were carved by the sculptors Matsuhisa Horin and Matsuhisa Sorin. The gate sits north of the great south gate, and from here the pagoda, Golden Hall and Lecture Hall run away northward in a straight line.
Why the Gate Is Registered
The Shitennoji Temple Middle Gate was rebuilt on the footprint recovered by careful excavation, as part of the first Japanese attempt to reconstruct an ancient temple from dug evidence. That precedent is the reason for its listing.
The most telling design decision is the single storey. A two-storey gate was possible, and other temples have one, but the height had to sit correctly between the pagoda behind it and the south gate in front. The low profile of this gate is the visible result of treating the whole precinct as one composition rather than a row of separate buildings.
What to Look For
Look up under the eaves. The single row of rafters fans outward toward each corner, and the bracket blocks are cut in the cloud-shaped form that marks conscious Asuka revival. The rafters and the cloud brackets read most clearly from directly in front, on the south side.
The guardian figures flanking the Shitennoji Temple Middle Gate can be studied at close range. Their mouths differ, open on one side and closed on the other, and the modelling of the muscles is pitched differently left and right. After passing through, turn back: from the courtyard side the stepped break in the roof reads quite differently than it does from the street.
Visiting the Shitennoji Temple Middle Gate
The south face of the Shitennoji Temple Middle Gate can be seen from the free part of the grounds, and the guardian figures are visible from outside as well. Looking at the gate alone therefore costs nothing.
Seeing it from the courtyard side means buying a central precinct ticket at the Nishijumon gate: 500 yen for adults, 300 yen for high school students, free for younger pupils. The temple publishes no blanket photography rule, so follow the notices on site. The precinct is opened free on the 21st and 22nd of each month and during the equinox observances.
