What the Shitennoji Temple Corridor Is
The Shitennoji Temple Corridor (四天王寺廻廊) is the roofed walkway of 1963 that encloses the Middle Gate, pagoda, Golden Hall and Lecture Hall at Shitennoji Temple in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 29 June 2022. At 1116 square metres it is the largest registered structure on the grounds, and it consists of a single-aisle gallery with two gatehouses set into its east and west sides.
What the corridor encloses is the central precinct. It is a building and a boundary at once. Visitors buy their tickets and pass inside through the western gatehouse, which is part of the corridor itself.
Why the Corridor Is Registered
The remarkable thing about the Shitennoji Temple Corridor is that its line has not moved. Excavation established exactly where the ancient gallery ran and how wide it was, and the reconstruction was set on that line. Halls and pagodas have burned and changed repeatedly over fourteen centuries; the outline of the sacred enclosure has not.
The detailing follows the evidence too. The gallery carries a single row of rafters fanning at the corners, and the roof structure sets forked struts on a curved tie beam. The two gatehouses are 3 bays wide under gabled roofs, with V-shaped split struts in the small wall above the lintel. That V-shaped strut is an old continental motif, and its use here shows how the Asuka manner was understood.
What to Look For
The Shitennoji Temple Corridor is a building you read by walking. Columns march at even intervals, and the precinct appears in slices between them. Every few steps the pagoda and the Golden Hall shift against each other. Circling from the east side to the north and round to the west tells you more about the structure than standing still ever will.
There are also plenty of places to look up into the roof frame. The forked struts standing on the curved beam are an archaic way of carrying a ridge. At the eastern gatehouse the V-shaped strut in the upper wall can be examined from close range.
Visiting the Shitennoji Temple Corridor
The outer face of the Shitennoji Temple Corridor is visible from the free part of the grounds. The long white wall and column line look best from inside the great south gate, or from near the Gokuraku Gate on the west.
Walking the gallery itself requires a central precinct ticket, sold at the western gatehouse in the corridor: 500 yen for adults, 300 yen for high school students, free for younger pupils. No blanket photography rule is published, so follow the notices on site. On the 21st and 22nd of each month and during the equinox observances the precinct is opened free, and the corridor can be walked without a ticket.
