What the Shitennoji Honbo Karamon Gate Is
The Shitennoji Honbo Karamon Gate (四天王寺本坊唐門) is a late Edo period gate, built between 1751 and 1830, standing at the southwest corner of the abbot's compound in the northeastern part of the grounds of Shitennoji Temple in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City, and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 29 June 2022. Its roof curves up in a bow across the front, the form known as mukai-karamon, and it is covered in heavy temple tiles where cypress bark once lay. The whole building occupies 6.2 square metres.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records repairs around the Tenpo era and a relocation around 1897. The gate was built as the main entrance to the Gochikoin, the hall where the memorial tablets of the Tokugawa shoguns were enshrined.
Why the Gate Is Registered
The criterion applied to the Shitennoji Honbo Karamon Gate is contribution to the historic character of the landscape. It was listed for what it does to the precinct rather than as a model of its type.
That is not to say the design is plain. Panelled doors, stone pads under the posts and columns tapered at both ends set a base vocabulary drawn from Zen temple carpentry, and on top of that sits ornament fit for the gate of a shogunal memorial hall. A dragon among clouds is carved above the curved tie beam to guard the shrine, the leaves of the Tokugawa crest are cut through the door panels, and the metal fittings are worked. The gap between the small span and the density of the carving is the point of the building.
What to Look For
Everything worth seeing gathers below the roof. In the mukai-karamon form the front slope rises in a wave, and that curve reads best from dead centre with your head slightly lowered. The ceiling inside the gate is coffered, so even the underside of this very small structure was not left rough.
If you can get near the doors, look for the three-leaf crest cut clean through the panel. That single detail carries the memory of the shogunal hall this gate once fronted. Look up and the dragon rides its cloud above the beam. At 6.2 square metres, the Shitennoji Honbo Karamon Gate puts its carving unusually close to eye level.
Visiting the Shitennoji Honbo Karamon Gate
The Shitennoji Honbo Karamon Gate stands in the abbot's compound in the northeastern part of the grounds. The garden there, the Garden of the Pure Land, is open for 300 yen for adults and 200 yen for school students, with younger children free, and it closes on set dates each month.
