What the Shitennoji Hakkakutei Pavilion Is
The Shitennoji Hakkakutei Pavilion (四天王寺八角亭) is a small Western-style building of 1903 in the abbot's compound at Shitennoji Temple in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 July 1997. Octagonal in plan, it is a single-storey timber structure with a tiled roof covering 21 square metres.
It is said to have been built as a small bandstand for the Fifth National Industrial Exhibition, held in Osaka in 1903, and moved here afterwards. The exhibition grounds lay across the Tennoji district next to the temple, so a building from a fair held over the wall ended up inside the precinct.
Why the Pavilion Is Registered
The criterion applied here is that the building would be difficult to reproduce. Most registered buildings at Shitennoji Temple were listed as models of their type; this one was listed because it could not easily be made again.
The craftsmanship is worth the visit. The main posts carry Corinthian capitals and a moulded cornice runs round the interior. What the Shitennoji Hakkakutei Pavilion records is how Meiji-era Japanese carpenters read classical European ornament and translated it into their own handwork.
What to Look For
Start with the colour. Coloured glass fills the windows on all eight sides, so the light changes whether you look from outside or within. The posts supporting the eaves stand free of any wall, which means the octagonal plan is legible simply from the ring of columns.
If you can get near a capital, look at the volutes and the carved foliage. Corinthian capitals belong properly to stone, and cutting those forms in timber is a different problem. The Shitennoji Hakkakutei Pavilion is low enough that its details sit close to eye level.

The Shitennoji Hakkakutei Pavilion stands in the abbot's compound. The garden there, the Garden of the Pure Land, is open for 300 yen for adults and 200 yen for school students, with younger children free, and it closes on set dates each month.
