What the Shitennoji Temple Golden Hall Is
The Shitennoji Temple Golden Hall (四天王寺金堂) is a Buddhist hall in the central precinct of Shitennoji Temple in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City, rebuilt in steel-reinforced concrete in 1961 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 29 June 2022. It carries a double roof in the irimoya hipped-and-gabled form, covered in tile with a stepped break between the two levels, and covers 231 square metres.
Inside stands the Guze Kannon, understood as the Buddhist counterpart of Prince Shotoku, guarded on four sides by the Four Heavenly Kings. Spring water is said to rise beneath the platform and to feed the Kameido hall nearby. The interior walls carry scenes from the life of the Buddha painted by Nakamura Gakuryo.
Why the Hall Is Registered
What earned the Shitennoji Temple Golden Hall its listing is not age. It is method. When the temple rebuilt after the 1945 air raids, it did not simply copy the building that had burned. Archaeologists dug the site, and the recovered plan, dimensions and post positions became the basis for a hall meant to stand where the seventh-century original had stood and to look as it might have looked. This was the first time in Japan that an ancient temple was reconstructed from excavation evidence in this way.
The elevation takes the Golden Hall at Horyuji as its starting point, but the two are not twins. Lines here run straighter and the massing is squarer, closer to continental models than to the softer Horyuji silhouette. Even the height was reasoned out, using the proportion between pagoda and hall observed at Horyuji. The building is an argument in timber form about what Asuka-period architecture looked like.
What to Look For
Start with the roof. The lower eaves reach far out and almost level, and where they meet the upper roof there is a distinct step, a treatment called shikoro-buki. The pitch appears to break halfway up. Visitors who know Horyuji tend to notice at once how much harder and more linear the outline of the Shitennoji Temple Golden Hall is.
Step inside and the light is dimmer than the bright courtyard suggests. The mural cycle was made for that dimness. Every morning at 11 o'clock a relic veneration is held in the hall, and worshippers gather with thin wooden tablets bearing the names of their dead. Timing a visit to that hour turns the building from an exhibit back into a working hall.
Visiting the Shitennoji Temple Golden Hall
The Shitennoji Temple Golden Hall stands inside the paid central precinct. Tickets are sold at the Nishijumon gate in the corridor and cost 500 yen for adults and 300 yen for high school students, with elementary and junior high pupils admitted free. From outside the corridor only the upper roof is visible, so seeing the whole building means going in.
The hall is open for worship and visitors may enter as far as the outer chamber. The temple publishes no blanket rule on photography, so follow the notices posted at each hall. On the 21st and 22nd of every month and during the equinox observances the central precinct is opened free of charge, and the Golden Hall can be seen without a ticket on those days.
