What the Shitennoji Seiryutei Tea House Is
The Shitennoji Seiryutei Tea House (四天王寺青龍亭) is a free-standing tea house of the late Meiji period, built between 1898 and 1912, in the garden of the abbot's compound at Shitennoji Temple in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City, and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 29 June 2022. It is a single-storey timber building of 15 square metres, roofed today in copper sheet where cedar bark once lay.
It reached its present position in 2003, when it was moved. The abbot's compound occupies the northeastern part of the temple grounds, and its garden is a stroll garden around ponds known as the Garden of the Pure Land.
Why the Tea House Is Registered
The plan is the reason. Inside are two tea rooms, one trapezoidal and one an equilateral triangle, joined by a preparation space. If the convention in tea architecture is a sequence of rectangular rooms, this building declines the convention outright.
The detailing pulls the other way. Surfaces and finishes are handled in the rustic hermitage manner, aiming at studied austerity, yet the openings are large and the interior is bright. An old idiom and modern daylighting share one small building, which places it precisely in the late Meiji years.
What to Look For
Study the outside while imagining the rooms behind it. The angles at which the walls turn, and the ridges of the roof, are the outward trace of that irregular internal division. On the west face of the Shitennoji Seiryutei Tea House an octagonal window opens, carrying the play with geometry through to the elevation.
The roof is copper now, cedar bark before. Copper shifts colour over the years, so the greenish surface visible today reads nothing like the warm brown of the original bark. It is a useful reminder of how much a change of material alters a building.
Visiting the Shitennoji Seiryutei Tea House
The Shitennoji Seiryutei Tea House stands within the abbot's garden. That garden, the Garden of the Pure Land, is open for a fee of 300 yen for adults and 200 yen for school students, with younger children free. The garden closes on set dates each month, so check before making the trip.
