What the Shitennoji Temple Lecture Hall Is
The Shitennoji Temple Lecture Hall (四天王寺講堂) is a steel-reinforced concrete hall of 1963 at the north end of the walled central precinct of Shitennoji Temple in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City, and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 29 June 2022. It has a single roof in the irimoya hipped-and-gabled form with a stepped tile covering, and at 317 square metres it has the largest floor area of the four buildings in the enclosure.
A lecture hall is where sutras are expounded and doctrine taught. Here the inner sanctuary is split down the middle: the eastern half is called the winter hall and holds an Eleven-Headed Kannon who relieves suffering in this life, while the western half, the summer hall, holds a large seated Amida who receives the dead into the next. One building, two destinations.
Why the Hall Is Registered
The Shitennoji Temple Lecture Hall belongs to the same reconstruction project as its neighbours, the first in Japan to rebuild an ancient temple from excavated evidence. Its east-west span, the round-log rafters fanning at the corners and the bronze wind bells hung at the eaves were all settled from what the digs turned up.
The intriguing part is that it was deliberately made unlike the Golden Hall. Its columns are thinner and their entasis is weaker. That was not economy but scholarship: the hall was modelled on early Tang precedent so that it would read as a different kind of building from the hall in front of it. A decision about which century to imitate survives here as a difference in column diameter.
What to Look For
Walk round to the north side and look up into the eaves. The corner rafters are round logs used more or less as they came, splaying out toward the angle. Sawn square rafters, the later norm, throw a completely different pattern of shadow.
Then stand in front and compare columns with the Golden Hall. The difference in thickness and swelling is small but visible once you are looking for it. Inside, murals by Gokura Senjin trace the eastward spread of Buddhism across the walls. Since the Shitennoji Temple Lecture Hall stands furthest north, anyone walking up the axis from the south reaches it last.
Visiting the Shitennoji Temple Lecture Hall
The Shitennoji Temple Lecture Hall is inside the paid central precinct. Tickets are sold at the Nishijumon gate in the corridor and cost 500 yen for adults and 300 yen for high school students, with younger pupils free. The hall is open for worship.
Only the roof shows above the corridor from outside, so seeing the front of the building means going in. No blanket photography rule is published, so follow the notices posted inside.
