What the Shitennoji Temple Ossuary Is
The Shitennoji Temple Ossuary (四天王寺納骨堂) is a small square hall of the middle Edo period, between 1661 and 1751, facing north in the southwestern part of the grounds of Shitennoji Temple in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City, and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 29 June 2022. A pyramidal roof of pantiles covers a plan three bays on each side, and the whole building takes up only 29 square metres.
It stands immediately west of the Amida Hall, and both were brought from Kuzukaji in Mie Prefecture. This one began as that temple's Shoten hall. It was relocated in 1953 and again in 1988, and it now holds ashes temporarily before they are interred in the temple's central memorial stupa.
Why the Hall Is Registered
Small, but exact. A single row of widely spaced rafters carries the eaves, the brackets are the simple three-block type, and the space between them holds a frog-leg strut at the centre of the front and plain sheathed struts elsewhere. The square posts are tapered at the top and the bracket arms are cut with a fine groove. Everything expected of a well-made small hall of the mid-Edo period is present.
Buildings moved more than once rarely keep this much of their detailing. Together with the Amida Hall beside it, the Shitennoji Temple Ossuary records the long relationship between Shitennoji Temple and its branch temple in Mie.
What to Look For
The piece to find is the miniature shrine at the centre of the interior. It is a small cabinet-like structure with a curved bargeboard over its roof, and it is by some distance the most worked part of the Shitennoji Temple Ossuary. Ash niches line three sides of the rear, with the shrine set in the middle of them, under a coffered ceiling.
From outside, look at the roof shape. A pyramidal roof brings its hips to a single point, which suits an almost square plan. The outline barely changes wherever you stand, so walking a full circle around the hall is the quickest way to see the logic of the form.
Visiting the Shitennoji Temple Ossuary
The Shitennoji Temple Ossuary is in the free part of the grounds and needs no ticket. It sits directly west of the Amida Hall, so finding one means finding the other.
This is a working ossuary, and its interior is a place of mourning. Anyone with business beyond ordinary worship, such as interment or the communal grave, should contact the temple directly, since separate guidance is issued for those procedures. The exterior of the Shitennoji Temple Ossuary can be seen at any hour. No blanket photography rule is published, so follow the notices on site.
