Renkyoji Temple at a Glance

Renkyoji Temple (蓮教寺) is a temple of the Takada branch of Shin Buddhism in the hills of Takabari, Meito Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture; its main hall, shoin, kuri, bell tower, gate with side walls and the main hall of its subtemple Bonnonji, six in all, were each registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on May 2, 2017.

According to Nagoya City, it was founded around the Chotoku era (995 to 999) and moved to its present site in 1716. The precinct was renovated from 2014 to 2016, with the priest, parishioners, local residents and children taking part, and its bright, open grounds won Nagoya's Machinami Design Award in fiscal 2016.

The Temple Buildings

According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the gate stands on the approach with the bell tower to its west and the main hall facing south beyond. The shoin is joined to the back of the main hall by a corridor, and the kuri stands east of the main hall. On the west side of the grounds, the main hall of the subtemple Bonnonji faces east.

The main hall dates from 1758, the kuri from 1763, the Bonnonji main hall from 1798, the shoin and gate from 1812 and the bell tower from 1882 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). A Shin temple assembled from the mid-Edo to the Meiji period survives together here.

Visiting

No official information was found on visiting the temple buildings. The grounds have been laid out as a temple open to the community, but be mindful of temple events when visiting. The address is 4-864 Takabari, Meito Ward, Nagoya.
