Renkyoji Temple Kuri (Priests' Quarters)
The Renkyoji Temple Kuri (Priests' Quarters) (蓮教寺庫裏) is a structure of 1763 in the grounds of Renkyoji in Takabari, Meito Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on May 2, 2017, under registration number 23-0473. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 249 square metres, renovated in the later Showa period.
Why It Was Registered
The Renkyoji Temple Kuri (Priests' Quarters) was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. According to the Agency, it stands east of the main hall: a gabled tiled building entered at the gable end, with lean-to roofs on the side and back. The south is an earth-floored area and the north has living rooms in three rows, with an alcove and built-in desk in the Buddhist altar room.
Outside, the walls are plastered with exposed timber framing, and the gable shows its struts and beams. The Agency notes that though simply built, it has a dignified presence.
What to Look For
Look at the struts and beams exposed on the gable and the plastered walls with exposed framing (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Dating from 1763, it is the second-oldest building in the grounds after the main hall and conveys the working side of temple life.
