Renkyoji Temple Sanmon Gate and Side Walls
The Renkyoji Temple Sanmon Gate and Side Walls (蓮教寺山門及び脇塀) is a structure of 1812 in the grounds of Renkyoji in Takabari, Meito Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on May 2, 2017, under registration number 23-0475. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records the gate as timber with a tiled roof, 3.7 metres wide, and the side walls as timber with tiled roofs, 23 metres long in total; they were renovated in 2000.
Why It Was Registered
The Renkyoji Temple Sanmon Gate and Side Walls was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. According to the Agency, it is a four-legged gate with a gabled tiled roof on the approach in front of the main hall, with plastered side walls turning at right angles on either side. The main posts are round and the rear posts square with decorative chamfers, and on the gable a large vase-shaped strut with scrolled panels carries the ridge.
The Agency describes its heavy, robust frame decorated throughout with carefully designed carving. Nagoya City's Machinami Design Award citation describes children playing beneath the gate.
What to Look For
Look at the vase-shaped strut with scrolled panels on the gable and the carving throughout; the thick timbers give the gate a weighty presence (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The plastered side walls turning at right angles on either side frame the front of the grounds.
