Renkyoji Temple Main Hall
The Renkyoji Temple Main Hall (蓮教寺本堂) is a structure of 1758 in the grounds of Renkyoji in Takabari, Meito Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on May 2, 2017, under registration number 23-0471. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 223 square metres, with a drum tower; it was extended in 1764 and 1812 and renovated in 2004.
Why It Was Registered
The Renkyoji Temple Main Hall was registered as a model of design. According to the Agency, it is a Takada-branch Shin main hall in the hills of eastern Nagoya: 5 ken by 5 ken, with a hipped tiled roof, facing south with a 1 ken porch. The entrance with its drum tower and the lean-to roofs at the back of both sides are later additions.
Inside, the outer sanctuary leads to the fenced area, with the inner sanctuary and side chambers at the back and a rear hall behind. The Agency regards it as a finely built hall with a typical Shin plan.
What to Look For
Look at the great hipped tiled roof and the front porch; the drum tower over the entrance adds to the Shin temple character (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The deep plan running from outer sanctuary to fenced area to inner sanctuary shows a hallmark of Shin main halls, built for large congregations.
