Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Kanagawa

The oldest of five thatched buildings in Hakone Gora Park, this farmhouse-style tea room by tea master Masuda Don’o has a sunken hearth and old salvaged timber.

The garden’s only non-tea building, a small bathhouse raised over a large natural boulder with a raw log frame, once the rock bath of the former mountain villa.

A grass-hut style tea room west of Hakuun-do, attributed to Ogi Rodo, with a tiny two-mat-plus-daime room and the unusual omission of a crawl-in door.

The Hachidan Entei is a gravity-type concrete sabo dam completed in 1928 on Mount Oyama in Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Built to prevent debris flows after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, this 37-meter-long, 11-meter-high structure is registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property, celebrated for its blend of traditional stone masonry and modern civil engineering.

Hirayama Bridge, spanning the Nakatsu River in Aikawa Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, is a curved-chord Pratt truss steel bridge first constructed in 1913. As a rare surviving example of Taisho-era riveted steel bridge construction, it is registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property and recognized as a Heritage of Modern Civil Engineering in Japan. The bridge also bears bullet scars from a 1945 World War II strafing attack, serving as a poignant war memorial.

Located in Oyama, Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, the Fukuromachi Dam is a gravity-type concrete sabo dam built in 1929 as part of erosion control measures following the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. Measuring 24 meters long and 6 meters high, this rubble masonry structure on the Fudosawa stream protects both downstream settlements and the ancient pilgrimage routes to sacred Mt. Oyama. It was registered as a nationally designated tangible cultural property in 2004.

Founded in 1882, the main building of Fujitaya Ryokan was built in 1923 and is a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property. This two-story wooden inn features exquisite kumiko latticework and openwork-carved transoms, with natural hot spring water flowing from the inn's own private source in Yugawara Onsen.

Tucked behind the Hanagoten wing of the Fujiya Hotel in Hakone-Miyanoshita, the Aerie is the oldest surviving building on the property. Built in 1884 as the first reconstruction after the great Miyanoshita fire of 1883, it already shows the signature Fujiya design of symmetrical corner projections and a central karahafu porch — the prototype for the later Main Building and Western Annexes. Registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 1997, it stands as one of the very few surviving examples of Japan's earliest resort-hotel architecture.
