A storehouse joined to the main house
The Hirao Family Residence Treasure Storehouse (平尾家住宅宝蔵) in Morio, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the large storehouse attached to the east side of the main house, built in 1931, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 7, 2008 (number 28-0305).
The Hirao Family Residence Treasure Storehouse is linked to the east side of the main house by a covered forecourt. It stands between the main house and the guest house, and walls run from its south and north ends, so it also acts as a hinge for the garden partitions.
It held the household valuables and is the principal early Showa building on the estate.
Eight bays under red tiles
The Hirao Family Residence Treasure Storehouse is a 2-storey earthen-walled storehouse of 8 bays by 2 and a half, gabled on a north-south ridge and roofed with red pantiles, with a building area of 102 m². The ground floor is rendered in mortar and the upper floor finished in lime plaster.
Inside are 3 rooms. The southern one is the main vault, and its door opens off the central room rather than to the outside, so the valuables sat two doors deep.
Scale and presence
The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out its size and dignified exterior. The white upper walls and red roof anchor the eastern half of the compound between the main house and the guest house.
Visiting
The Hirao Family Residence Treasure Storehouse stands deep in the northern half of the estate and is not open; it is barely visible from the road.
The story of the estate, what can be seen from the road and directions are on the Hirao Family Residence page.
