At right angles to the ceramics storehouse
The Hirao Family Residence West Storehouse (平尾家住宅西蔵) in Morio, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the storehouse set at right angles to the ceramics storehouse, built in 1833 and remodelled in the early Showa era, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 7, 2008 (number 28-0312).
The Hirao Family Residence West Storehouse meets the ceramics storehouse at a right angle and faces east. The livestock barn backs onto it from the south, continuing the line of buildings toward the waiting house, so it sits on the boundary between the storehouse corner and the working yard west of the main house.
Built in 1833, it is an Edo-period storehouse that was refitted in the early Showa era and kept in use.
Shelves and cupboards inside
The Hirao Family Residence West Storehouse is a 2-storey earthen-walled storehouse of 3 and a half bays by 2, gabled and pantiled with a pent roof over its east front, and a building area of 28 m². The white plaster walls have an exposed-aggregate skirting; double doors open on the east and 2 tiers of windows on the west.
Inside, shelves and cupboards are built in, a sign that it held goods to be sorted and stored rather than bulk produce.
Gables in sequence
The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes how its walls run on from the ceramics storehouse gable to create a varied scene. The two storehouses locked at right angles define the outline of the northwest corner.
