Turning along the river

The Hirao Family Residence Garden South Wall (平尾家住宅庭南塀) in Morio, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the clay wall closing the south side of the garden before the main house, built in the early Showa era, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 7, 2008 (number 28-0338).

The Hirao Family Residence Garden South Wall runs south from the middle gate fence and turns to follow the Morio River, separating the garden before the main house from the bridge and the riverside.

Rubble base, black plaster

The Hirao Family Residence Garden South Wall is 19 metres long in total. The north-south stretch matches the height of the board fence, and the riverside stretch steps up higher.

A cut-stone footing sits on a rubble base. On the garden side the posts are left exposed in a clay wall; on the outside they are buried in a smooth wall of black plaster.

A strong base

The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the rubble base for its strong appearance. Finishing the garden side and the outer side differently is a habit shared by walls throughout the estate.

Visiting

The Hirao Family Residence Garden South Wall is inside the estate, not open, and not visible from the road.
