East of the rice storehouse

The Hirao Family Residence Carpenters' Shed (平尾家住宅大工小屋) in Morio, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the two-storey shed used for carpentry and storage, built in the late Edo period and repaired in the later Showa era, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 7, 2008 (number 28-0331).

The Hirao Family Residence Carpenters' Shed is a 2-storey timber building on a north-south ridge east of the rice storehouse. An estate with so many buildings needed a workshop for repairs and for making tools.

The well house adjoins the west end of its south side, with the water tower beyond, forming a working corner in the southeast of the compound.

Garage and workroom below, storage above

The Hirao Family Residence Carpenters' Shed is gabled and pantiled, 5 and a half bays by 3, with a building area of 64 m². The walls are fully plastered over the frame, with the upper floor left in the intermediate clay coat and the ground floor finished in white lime plaster.

The upper floor is storage, with 2 sliding-slat windows in the east wall. The ground floor has a garage at the north end and an earth-floored room 4 bays long to the south.

A building that changed with the times

A garage inside a late Edo-period shed shows how the Hirao Family Residence Carpenters' Shed was adapted to the age of the motor car as the Showa era went on.
