A narrow shed by the compost shed

The Hirao Family Residence Firewood Shed (平尾家住宅薪小屋) in Morio, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the shed for storing firewood, built in 1932, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 7, 2008 (number 28-0319).

The Hirao Family Residence Firewood Shed is a long, narrow shed against the south end of the compound's compost shed, used to stack wood for the kitchen hearths and the bath.

With the inui storehouse, the tatsugoya shed and the compost shed, it forms the U-shaped group around the farmyard in the northwest corner.

Board walls and a wide open front

The Hirao Family Residence Firewood Shed is gabled and pantiled on an east-west ridge, 7.9 metres by 2.3 metres, a single storey with a building area of 18 m².

Vertical boards enclose the back and both ends; on the front only the end bays are boarded, leaving a wide opening for stacking and taking out wood.

A different face of the estate

The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, with its neighbours, it gives this corner a character quite different from the area around the main house. It is among the latest precisely dated buildings on the estate.
