Into the inner garden

The Hirao Family Residence Detached House East Partition Wall and Wicket Gate (平尾家住宅離れ東仕切塀及び潜り門) in Morio, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the partition wall and wicket gate dividing the guest house front from the inner garden, built in the mid-Meiji era, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 7, 2008 (number 28-0341).

The Hirao Family Residence Detached House East Partition Wall and Wicket Gate separates the space before the guest house from the inner garden, running from the south side of the guest lavatory to the riverside wall. A wicket gate in the middle connects the two.

Wicket door and white plaster

The wicket gate of the Hirao Family Residence Detached House East Partition Wall and Wicket Gate is 1.0 metres wide with a plank door in the centre; the bays on either side are white plaster above vertical board skirting.

The wall is 1.9 metres long, gabled and pantiled. The northernmost bay tucks under the eaves of the guest lavatory, so its roof is left off.

Fitted to its neighbour

Dropping the roof where it meets the lavatory eaves shows the wall was designed together with the guest house. Short as it is, it marks the change from the forecourt to the inner garden.
