Continuing from the tatsugoya shed
The Hirao Family Residence Compost Shed (平尾家住宅堆肥舎) in Morio, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the shed for making and storing compost, built in the early Showa era, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 7, 2008 (number 28-0318).
The Hirao Family Residence Compost Shed is a single-storey building running on south from the tatsugoya shed, its roof a step lower, so the two make a stepped line along the western edge of the site. The firewood shed adjoins its east side at the south end.
Before chemical fertiliser, compost for the fields was an essential farm resource.
Clay front, clapboard sides
The Hirao Family Residence Compost Shed measures 3 and a half bays by 2 on a single storey, gabled and pantiled on a north-south ridge, with a building area of 28 m².
The east front is clay-walled with a pair of sliding doors in the middle; the south and west sides are clad in clapboard.
Part of the western edge
The Agency for Cultural Affairs counts it, with the tatsugoya shed, as part of the western face of the estate, plain and practical in contrast to the buildings around the main house.
Visiting
The Hirao Family Residence Compost Shed is in the northwest of the estate, not open, and not visible from the street.
The story of the estate, what can be seen from the road and directions are on the Hirao Family Residence page.
