Between the west storehouse and the waiting house
The Hirao Family Residence Livestock Barn (平尾家住宅畜舎) in Morio, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the barn where the household kept cattle and chickens, built in the early Showa era, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 7, 2008 (number 28-0315).
The Hirao Family Residence Livestock Barn is a single-storey building west of the main house, wedged between the west storehouse and the waiting house. Its north wall touches the storehouse, and on the south its roof edge is carried across to the waiting house, making a covered passage underneath, so the buildings run on without a gap through the working yard.
A short partition wall closes the space between the barn and the main house, keeping the animals apart from the living quarters.
Chickens to the south, cattle to the north
The Hirao Family Residence Livestock Barn measures 5.6 metres by 4.3 metres, a tiled single-storey timber building with a building area of 24 m².
The southern half was a henhouse and the northern half a cattle shed. The henhouse has clay only in the narrow band of wall above the openings; below that, tie beams run between the posts with no infill, leaving it open to the air.
Farming in the compound
Even a headman's household depended on its draft cattle and hens. The barn shows the working western side of the compound, in contrast to the guest rooms and gardens on the east.
Visiting
The Hirao Family Residence Livestock Barn is north of the river and not open; it is barely visible from the road.
The story of the estate, what can be seen from the road and directions are on the Hirao Family Residence page.
