Continuing from the tool storehouse

The Hirao Family Residence Lower Storehouse (平尾家住宅下の蔵) in Morio, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the storehouse continuing west from the tool storehouse, built in 1893 and moved to its present site in the early Showa era, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 7, 2008 (number 28-0329).

The Hirao Family Residence Lower Storehouse turns at a right angle from the west end of the tool storehouse. With the gatehouse and tool storehouse it forms the southern frontage of the estate, a continuous run of white walls along the street.

It was built in 1893 and, like the tool storehouse, moved to its present position in the early Showa era.

Five bays, matching its neighbour

The Hirao Family Residence Lower Storehouse is a 2-storey earthen-walled storehouse of 5 bays by 2 under a floating gabled roof of pantiles, with a building area of 38 m². The pent roof of the tool storehouse carries straight on along its north side.

Outside it matches the tool storehouse: white plaster above cut stone, with an exposed-aggregate skirting.

White to the street, red tiles inside

The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, together with the tool storehouse, it presents an unbroken white plaster wall to the street while a red-tiled pent roof runs along the inner side, a lighter face for the household. The storehouse shows one face to the world and another to the family.
