Beside the gatehouse
The Hirao Family Residence Tool Storehouse (平尾家住宅道具蔵) in Morio, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the storehouse joined to the west end of the gatehouse, built in 1805 and moved to its present site in the early Showa era, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 7, 2008 (number 28-0328).
The Hirao Family Residence Tool Storehouse adjoins the west end of the gatehouse at a right angle and held the household's implements for ceremonies and farm work. The lower storehouse continues from it to the west, so a line of white storehouse walls faces the street.
It was built in 1805 and moved here in the early Showa era, the second oldest dated building on the estate after the new storehouse.
White plaster on cut stone
The Hirao Family Residence Tool Storehouse is a 2-storey earthen-walled storehouse of 4 bays by 2 and a half under a floating gabled roof of pantiles, with a pent roof wrapping the north and west sides. Its building area is 31 m².
It stands on 2 courses of cut stone, with plastered walls, an exposed-aggregate mortar skirting and a drip course.
Weight at the front
The Agency for Cultural Affairs says it gives the compound a sense of weight. Finished to the same specification as the gatehouse, lower storehouse and rice storehouse, it helps form a consistent row of white walls along the front.
Visiting
The white walls of the Hirao Family Residence Tool Storehouse face the street and can be seen from outside; the interior is not open.
