What Is the Enryakuji Temple Sorinto?
The Enryakuji Temple Sorinto (延暦寺相輪橖, Sōrintō) is a bronze pagoda spire completed around 1895 in the Saitō precinct of Mount Hiei, Sakamoto Honmachi, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture; it was designated in 1917 and is now an Important Cultural Property. A sōrintō takes the ringed finial that normally crowns a pagoda roof and sets it on its own post at ground level, so what rises among the cedars here is the top of a pagoda with no pagoda beneath it.
Otsu City's heritage notes record a tradition that Saichō first erected a sōrintō here in 820 and placed sutras inside it. The present one was cast in bronze in the Meiji period and finished around 1895; the national database gives the same date, describes it as a "bronze sōrintō" and counts it as a single structure.
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Enryakuji Temple Sorinto stands on the hill north of the Tenpōrin-dō, the main hall of Saitō. It sits apart from the halls arranged along Saitō's stone steps, alone on higher ground.
How It Is Built, and Why It Is Protected
Otsu City gives the height of the Enryakuji Temple Sorinto as 11.65 metres and explains how it goes together. A wooden post stands on a foundation stone; over it slide, in order, the satsukan tube, the ukebana lotus collar, the nine rings (kurin) and the sacred jewel on top, all in bronze. Four struts brace the whole thing. It is, in effect, a wooden core wrapped in metal.
On a pagoda, this part sits at the very top of the roof, far out of reach. Here it begins at eye level, so you can follow the petals of the lotus collar and the thickness of each ring from the bottom up.
The spire was designated in 1917, under the Ancient Shrines and Temples Preservation Law, when it was barely twenty years old. What was recognised, it seems, was the continuity of a form traced back to Saichō, carried forward with modern casting. It has been an Important Cultural Property since the postwar heritage law took effect.
What to Look For
Start at the base: the foundation stone and the four struts angled out to hold the slender shaft. The spire does not stand on its own; it is propped.
Then read upward: tube, lotus collar, the nine evenly spaced rings, and the jewel. The patina shifts slightly from ring to ring, and the jewel's outline is clearest against open sky.
Cedars surround the hill, and when the sun gets through, the bronze picks up a scatter of light and shade.
Visiting: Finding the Spire
The Enryakuji Temple Sorinto stands in the open on the hill north of the Tenpōrin-dō. You can see it during Saitō opening hours with the combined Tōdō, Saitō and Yokawa ticket; there is no interior, so you view it from around its base.
It stands on the rise north of the Tenpōrin-dō, on the way to the Ruri-dō; wear shoes suited to mountain paths if you plan to continue. The temple publishes no photography policy; follow any signs on site.
