The Mikkabi Station Building
The Tenryu Hamanako Railway Mikkabi Station Building (天竜浜名湖鉄道三ヶ日駅本屋) is a wooden station building of 1936 on the Tenryu Hamanako Railway at Mikkabi Station in Hamana Ward, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 26, 2011 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber building of 194 square metres, roofed in tile and partly in sheet iron, altered in 1987; registration number 22-0146.
One of the Western Section's First Stations
The building lies about 4.6 kilometres north-east of the Riki Tunnel and faces north; it is single-storey and timber (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Its hipped tiled roof runs east to west, with a hipped porch projecting at the west of the front and a sheet-iron canopy on the platform side; the waiting room is to the west and the office to the east.
According to the railway, its property record dates construction to April 1936, making it one of the earliest stations, built for the opening of the Shinjohara to Mikkabi section on December 1 that year. The original built-in wooden bench runs along the west wall of the waiting room under a chequered plywood ceiling.
Why It Was Registered
It was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is one of the first stations of the western section and keeps its waiting-room fittings.
What to Look For
Look for the hipped porch projecting from the front, the original built-in bench and the chequered plywood ceiling of the waiting room (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Tenryu Hamanako Railway).
