The Tenryu-Futamata Station Down Platform and Shelter
The Tenryu Hamanako Railway Tenryu-Futamata Station Down Platform and Shelter (天竜浜名湖鉄道天竜二俣駅下り上屋及びプラットホーム) is a platform with a timber shelter of 1940 on the Tenryu Hamanako Railway at Tenryu-Futamata Station in Tenryu Ward, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 26, 2011 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber shelter of 205 square metres roofed in sheet iron, on a concrete platform 94 metres long; registration number 22-0164.
A Twin of the Up Platform
The down platform is an island platform facing the up platform to the south (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Toward the west end of its 94 metres stands a shelter 40 metres long and 2.6 metres deep with a modified truss roof.
According to the railway, the gable ends are boarded vertically and, as on the up platform, old rails from the Yawata Steel Works are used in the frame.
Why It Was Registered
It was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency notes that the matching up and down platforms and shelters give the station the presence of a hub.
What to Look For
Look for the shelter that matches the up platform in form and size, the modified truss roof and the old rails in its frame (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Tenryu Hamanako Railway).
