The Tenryu-Futamata Station Building
The Tenryu Hamanako Railway Tenryu-Futamata Station Building (天竜浜名湖鉄道天竜二俣駅本屋) is a wooden station building of 1940 on the Tenryu Hamanako Railway at Tenryu-Futamata Station in Tenryu Ward, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 26, 2011 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber building of 460 square metres with a tiled roof, altered in the late Showa era (1966 to 1989); registration number 22-0162.
The Former Totoumi-Futamata Station
The building stands in the centre of Futamata and is 20 by 13 metres, single-storey and timber (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Its tiled gabled roof runs east to west with open fronts on both sides, the waiting room to the west and the office to the east; the walls are vertical boards on a brick base.
According to the railway, it was built in June 1940 for the opening of the whole Futamata Line, when the station was called Totoumi-Futamata. The ticket window projects into the waiting room under a coved ceiling. South-east of the building stretch the depot and track maintenance yards, with the depot office, the turntable and the roundhouse.
Why It Was Registered
It was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency notes how the deep open eaves give depth to an otherwise plain exterior.
What to Look For
Look for the deep open eaves front and back, the brick base, and the coved ceiling and projecting ticket window in the waiting room (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Tenryu Hamanako Railway).
