The Sakuragi Station Building and Up Platform
The Tenryu Hamanako Railway Sakuragi Station Building and Up Platform (天竜浜名湖鉄道桜木駅本屋及び上りプラットホーム) is a wooden station building and platform of 1935 on the Tenryu Hamanako Railway at Sakuragi Station in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 26, 2011 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey wooden building of 93 square metres, roofed in tile and partly in sheet iron, with a concrete platform 86 metres long; registration number 22-0174.
One of the First Three Stations
The building is 12 by 4.5 metres, single-storey and timber, with the 86-metre platform on its south side (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It has a gabled roof with a canopy over the platform side and a store on the east end; the walls are plaster above and clapboard below, a plain design.
According to the railway, Sakuragi was one of three stations opened on April 17, 1935, the first day of the Futamata Line, and was first named Totoumi-Sakuragi. The original sliding wooden door survives at the ticket gate, and the ticket window projects into the waiting room.
Why It Was Registered
It was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It shows the small timber stations built when the line first opened.
What to Look For
Look for the original sliding wooden door at the ticket gate, the ticket window jutting into the waiting room and the original bench on the west side (Tenryu Hamanako Railway), and the plaster-over-clapboard walls.
