The Gansuiji Station Waiting Shelter and Platform
The Tenryu Hamanako Railway Gansuiji Station Waiting Shelter and Platform (天竜浜名湖鉄道岩水寺駅待合所及びプラットホーム) is an island platform with a timber waiting shelter of 1940 on the Tenryu Hamanako Railway at Gansuiji Station in Hamana Ward, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 26, 2011 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber shelter of 20 square metres with a slate roof, on a concrete platform 92 metres long, altered in 1991; registration number 22-0159.
A Shelter on Free-Standing Posts
Gansuiji Station lies about 2 kilometres north-east of Miyaguchi and has an island platform 92 metres long running east to west (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Toward the west end, a 10-metre shelter stands on free-standing posts carrying a modified truss roof, with walls on its northern half.
According to the railway, the shelter was originally an open roof without walls; the walls were added in 1991. Five free-standing posts carry the roof and are reinforced with old rails. The original 1940 timber station building was demolished, and the platform shelter is now the station.
Why It Was Registered
It was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency notes its distinctive roof structure on free-standing posts.
What to Look For
Look for the five free-standing posts carrying the modified truss roof and the old rails that reinforce them (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Tenryu Hamanako Railway).
Visiting
Gansuiji is a working station, so the platform and shelter can be seen when you travel by train. Gansuiji Station is unstaffed (Tenryu Hamanako Railway). Gansuiji Temple is a 15-minute walk (Tenryu Hamanako Railway). Tickets, fares and the turntable tour are covered on the Tenryu Hamanako Railway page. Do not enter the tracks or railway land.
The Hamakita Ward of Hamamatsu named in the Agency's record became part of Hamana Ward when the city reorganised its wards on January 1, 2024; town names and lot numbers did not change (Hamamatsu City).
