The Nishi-Kiga Station Waiting Shelter

The Tenryu Hamanako Railway Nishi-Kiga Station Waiting Shelter (天竜浜名湖鉄道西気賀駅待合所) is a wooden waiting shelter of 1938 on the Tenryu Hamanako Railway at Nishi-Kiga Station in Hamana Ward, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 26, 2011 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a single-storey timber shelter of 10 square metres with a slate roof, altered in 1959; registration number 22-0148.

A Small Shelter on the Down Platform

The shelter stands on the down platform across the tracks north of the station building; it is 6.4 by 1.5 metres, single-storey and timber (Agency for Cultural Affairs). A braced frame carries its lean-to slate roof, and the vertical-boarded side and back walls have large windows with sliding glazed doors.

According to the railway, the front is open with short wing walls, wooden glazed windows fill three sides and the bench survives. The rear eaves beam and rafters are stiffened with horizontal wooden braces, and the beam ends at the eaves are cut into curves, a distinctive touch.

Why It Was Registered

It was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency notes it as an open, airy waiting shelter.

What to Look For

Look for the large windows with wooden glazed doors on three sides, the surviving bench and the curved beam ends at the eaves (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Tenryu Hamanako Railway).

Visiting

Nishi-Kiga is a working station, so the building and shelter can be seen when you travel by train. Nishi-Kiga Station is unstaffed (Tenryu Hamanako Railway). The old Himekaido road is about five minutes away (Tenryu Hamanako Railway). Tickets, fares and the turntable tour are covered on the Tenryu Hamanako Railway page. Do not enter the tracks or railway land.

The Kita Ward of Hamamatsu named in the Agency's record became part of Hamana Ward when the city reorganised its wards on January 1, 2024; town names and lot numbers did not change (Hamamatsu City).
