The Haranoya Station Building
The Tenryu Hamanako Railway Haranoya Station Building (天竜浜名湖鉄道原谷駅本屋) is a wooden station building of 1935 on the Tenryu Hamanako Railway at Haranoya Station in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 26, 2011 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey wooden building of 71 square metres, roofed in tile and partly in sheet iron; registration number 22-0173.
A Station with Its Wooden Ticket Gate
The building is 13 by 4.5 metres, single-storey and timber, gabled north to south with a slate roof extended over the platform (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The ticket window and wooden ticket gate survive in the waiting room.
According to the railway, Haranoya was also one of the three stations opened on April 17, 1935. The ceiling is boarded with narrow planks, and the braces that carry the rear lean-to are set close together like a lattice. The station takes its name from the nearby Haranoya River (Tenryu Hamanako Railway).
Why It Was Registered
It was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is an original station building that keeps its ticket window and gate fittings.
What to Look For
Look for the heavy timber ticket gate and the original bench on the north side (Tenryu Hamanako Railway), and the closely spaced braces under the rear lean-to.
