The charcoal shed south of the front gate
The Kusaka Family Residence Charcoal Shed (日下家住宅炭小屋, Kusaka-ke Jūtaku Sumigoya) in Awaga, Santo-cho, Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the shed where the household stored its charcoal, built in the mid-Meiji era; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011 (number 28-0504). It stands west of the treasure storehouse, facing the stable across the front gate.
The Kusaka Family Residence Charcoal Shed held the charcoal that fuelled the household. From its south end the storage sheds run west and then along the street.
A small two-storey building
The Kusaka Family Residence Charcoal Shed runs north-south under a hipped-and-gabled pantile roof, 2 storeys in timber and 3.9 metres by 3.7 metres, with a building area of 15 m². Each floor is a single room, and a large window opens on the east side upstairs.
A solid entrance, paired with the stable
The west and north walls of the Kusaka charcoal shed are thick plastered walls that bury the posts, finished at the intermediate clay coat. The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered it for the way it combines with the stable across the gate to give the compound a solid, formal entrance. A modest outbuilding, it does real work in holding the front of the property together.
Visiting
The Kusaka Family Residence Charcoal Shed is within the private grounds and is not open. Its west and north walls face the gateway, so they may be seen when looking at the front gate from the road; please be considerate of the residents.
