The back gate between the new wing and the rice mill
The Kusaka Family Residence Back Gate (日下家住宅裏門, Kusaka-ke Jūtaku Uramon) in Awaga, Santo-cho, Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the back gate on the east side of the compound, built in 1839; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011 (number 28-0509). It stands toward the north end of the east side, between the new wing and the rice-polishing shed.

Three rows of brackets under the eaves
The Kusaka Family Residence Back Gate runs north-south under a pantile roof and is 3.0 metres long. A lintel beam rests on the main posts, and three rows of cantilevered brackets run fore and aft to carry the eave beams, with a ceiling under the eaves and a single layer of widely spaced rafters.
Dignity at the back
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Kusaka back gate gives the rear of the compound a dignified presence. It is only a back entrance, yet it is carefully framed with layered brackets, and its date, 1839, is precisely known.
