A garden gate between the main house and the bathhouse
The Kusaka Family Residence Middle Gate (日下家住宅中門, Kusaka-ke Jūtaku Chūmon) in Awaga, Santo-cho, Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the garden gate dividing the service passage from the garden, built in the late Taisho era; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011 (number 28-0508). It stands between the main house and the guest bathhouse.
The Kusaka Family Residence Middle Gate separates the service passage from the garden, with covered corridors running off it to east and west.
A gable raised above the corridors
The Kusaka Family Residence Middle Gate is 1.2 metres wide and 1.0 metres deep, with a gabled pantile roof running east-west. Its ridge stands higher than the roofs of the corridors, marking the gateway. The eaves have closely spaced rafters left exposed beneath, and the floor is paved with black stone.
A light, airy garden gate
The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the Kusaka middle gate a light and airy garden gate. Small and tied into the corridors, it is still carefully detailed, from the close-set rafters to the black stone floor, giving the way into the garden some ceremony.
