A storehouse at the back of the main house
The Kusaka Family Residence Inner Storehouse (日下家住宅内蔵, Kusaka-ke Jūtaku Uchigura) in Awaga, Santo-cho, Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the two-storey storehouse joined to the south side of the main house, built in 1846; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011 (number 28-0495). It was remodelled in the late Taisho era.
The Kusaka Family Residence Inner Storehouse is reached from the south side of the main house through an anteroom, the kuramae, so the family storehouse was entered from the house itself.
Plaster, pebble render and a stone plinth
The Kusaka Family Residence Inner Storehouse runs north-south under a gabled pantile roof set on posts above the clay body, the okiyane form used on storehouses. It is a 2-storey earthen storehouse 6.0 metres by 5.0 metres, with a building area of 30 m².
The walls change finish in three bands: lime plaster above, an exposed-aggregate mortar dado, and a plinth of stones at the foot.
An accent in the garden
Distinctive windows are set one above the other in the west wall of the Kusaka inner storehouse, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that they act as an accent in the view from the garden south of the main house.
Visiting
The Kusaka Family Residence Inner Storehouse lies inside the home and is not open. It faces the garden side of the main house and is hardly visible from the road.
