The stable in the northwest corner

The Kusaka Family Residence Stable (日下家住宅厩, Kusaka-ke Jūtaku Umaya) in Awaga, Santo-cho, Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the stable where the household kept its cattle, built in the mid-Meiji era; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011 (number 28-0503). It stands in the northwest corner of the site, west of the Taisho storehouse.

The Kusaka Family Residence Stable housed cattle on the ground floor, with rooms for servants upstairs. It flanks the front gate on the north side, facing the charcoal shed across the gateway.

Two storeys with a lean-to on the north

The Kusaka Family Residence Stable is an east-west building with a gabled pantile roof and a lean-to on the north side, 2 storeys high and 3.9 metres by 4.1 metres, with a building area of 16 m². The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as earthen-walled, finished inside and out at the intermediate clay coat.

Plain and sturdy

The Agency describes the Kusaka stable as plain and unpretentious. Animals below and workers above, it is a purely practical building, yet together with the charcoal shed opposite it gives the entrance of the compound its solid, formal look.

Visiting

The Kusaka Family Residence Stable is within the private grounds and is not open. Because it flanks the front gate, part of it may be seen when looking at the gateway from the road; please be considerate of the residents.
