High on a stone wall above the street

The Kusaka Family Residence New Wing (日下家住宅新居, Kusaka-ke Jūtaku Shinkyo) in Awaga, Santo-cho, Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the residential wing at the east end of the compound, built in 1939; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011 (number 28-0494). It is an east-west range continuing east from the kitchen wing.

Shinkyo means simply "new residence", and this is the newest living wing in the compound, built in the same year as the forestry office. The east side of the Kusaka Family Residence New Wing faces the street from the top of a tall stone wall.

A hipped-and-gabled block with a hipped projection

The Kusaka Family Residence New Wing is a single-storey timber building, 8.3 metres by 6.5 metres, with a building area of 61 m². It has a hipped-and-gabled pantile roof, with a hipped projecting wing on the south side.

The two northern rooms are finished as formal rooms with a tokonoma alcove and a shoin desk. Outside the windows runs a narrow external veranda, which gives the elevation depth above the stonework.

The compound's face to the east

The tall stone wall and the verandaed windows give the east side of the Kusaka compound a handsome face to the street, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the new wing for its contribution to the historic landscape. An early Showa living wing was clearly designed with the outward look of the property in mind.

Visiting

The Kusaka Family Residence New Wing is part of the family home and is not open inside. Its east side faces the street, so the wing on its stone wall can be seen from the road; look in passing and keep clear of the residents.

The background of the property, what can be seen from outside and directions are on the Kusaka Family Residence (Asago) page.
