A well in the garden south of the kitchen
The Kusaka Family Residence Well (日下家住宅井戸, Kusaka-ke Jūtaku Ido) in Awaga, Santo-cho, Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the stone-curbed well set in the garden, made in the early Showa era; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011 (number 28-0506). It lies in the garden east of the main house and south of the kitchen wing.
The Kusaka Family Residence Well sits just south of the wing that held the kitchen and bath, and supplied the household with water.
A granite curb in notched joints
The curb of the Kusaka Family Residence Well is made of granite blocks 1.3 metres long, 0.16 metres thick and 0.27 metres high, notched into one another to form a square frame. The opening is 0.7 metres square, the curb stands 0.5 metres high and covers 0.5 m², and the shaft is 4.1 metres deep.
Part of the garden
Natural stones are laid around the Kusaka well so that it blends into the garden, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs registered it as part of the garden composition. The neatly cut granite frame against rough fieldstone is what to look for.
Visiting
The Kusaka Family Residence Well is in the private garden and is not open. It cannot be seen from the road.
