The kitchen block east of the main house
The Kusaka Family Residence Kitchen Wing (日下家住宅炊事場, Kusaka-ke Jūtaku Suijiba) in Awaga, Santo-cho, Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the kitchen wing attached to the east side of the main house, built in the late Edo period; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011 (number 28-0493). It was remodelled into its present form in the late Taisho era.
The Kusaka Family Residence Kitchen Wing is an east-west range fixed to the east side of the main house, with the new wing continuing beyond it. It gathers cooking, eating and bathing in one block.
Kitchen, dining room and bath in a row
The Kusaka Family Residence Kitchen Wing is a single-storey timber building with a gabled pantile roof, 10 metres by 7.5 metres, with a building area of 85 m². An earth floor runs along the north side and a corridor along the south, with the kitchen, dining room and bath between them.
The kitchen is planned around a central work table, and the bath is lined with small ceramic tiles, fittings that most likely date from the Taisho remodelling.
A modern living space
The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the modern living space inside the Kusaka kitchen wing. An up-to-date Taisho kitchen and bathroom were fitted into a late Edo building, a clear picture of a landowning family keeping its house current.
