An earthen wall round the south and east
The Kusaka Family Residence Earthen Wall (日下家住宅土塀, Kusaka-ke Jūtaku Dobei) in Awaga, Santo-cho, Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the earthen wall enclosing the south and east sides of the compound, built late in the Edo period; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011 (number 28-0511). It runs along the south side of the site and the southern half of the east side.
The Kusaka Family Residence Earthen Wall is 88 metres long and encloses much of the compound. On the east it stands on a retaining wall of fieldstone; on the south, on a fieldstone footing.
A tiled coping on brackets
The Kusaka Family Residence Earthen Wall is 1.8 to 2.3 metres high. Brackets project to both sides at the top and carry sparsely spaced rafters and a pantile coping. Lime plaster survives on the garden face and in places on the outside.
A calm, settled enclosure
The Agency for Cultural Affairs says the Kusaka earthen wall gives the property a calm, settled frontage. Running long and low with the stone walls beneath it, the tiled wall shapes how the compound looks from the road, and it has held the edge of the site since late in the Edo period.
Visiting
Because the Kusaka Family Residence Earthen Wall runs round the outside of the compound, it can be seen from the road. The grounds are not open; this is a family home, so look in passing.
