Three eight-mat rooms facing the garden
The Kusaka Family Residence Parlor Wing (日下家住宅座敷, Kusaka-ke Jūtaku Zashiki) in Awaga, Santo-cho, Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is the parlor wing facing the garden, built in 1846; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011 (number 28-0496). It was remodelled around 1890.
The Kusaka Family Residence Parlor Wing stands southeast of the main house as an east-west range, its formal reception rooms turned toward the garden that spreads to the south.
A formal step, verandas and a dressing room
The Kusaka Family Residence Parlor Wing is a single-storey timber building under a hipped-and-gabled pantile roof, with a building area of 107 m². Three eight-mat rooms run in a line from west to east. A formal entrance step, the shikidai, sits at the west end of the south side, and from there boarded and open verandas wrap round to the east, so guests could move between the rooms with the garden in view.
Between the parlor and the main house are a dressing room and a washroom.
Light sukiya design
The eaves of the Kusaka parlor wing carry a canopy in sukiya taste, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it an elegant reception building. This is where a landowning family received its guests, and its light detailing is the opposite of the heavy framing of the main house.
Visiting
The Kusaka Family Residence Parlor Wing is part of the family home and is not open. It faces the garden on the south side of the compound and is hardly visible from the road.
