About the Tada Family Residence Front Gate
The Tada Family Residence Front Gate (多田家住宅表門, Tada-ke Jūtaku Omotemon) is the main gate of an old family estate, built around 1891 in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. It is a timber Yakuimon with a tiled roof, 2.9 meters wide, with a wicket door.
It stands on the south side of the estate, set a little back from the street.
Main Posts Half Stone, Half Wood
The main posts are what set the Tada Front Gate apart. The front half of each is a granite pillar and the back half a timber post, and together they carry the head beam. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls this construction unusual.
From the street you see stone; step through and the posts turn to wood. The gate shows strength to the road and the warmth of timber to the house.
A Yakuimon with a West Wicket
The Tada Family Residence Front Gate measures 2.9 by 1.7 meters, under a gabled kirizuma roof of pantiles, with the wicket on the west side. Everyday comings and goings would have used the wicket, with the main leaves opened for guests.
The stone wall of about 1933 runs east and west from both sides of the gate, laid 5 courses high beside the gate and 3 courses high along the street, raising the frame around the entrance.
Why It Was Registered
The Front Gate qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency says it gives the estate a dignified front. Its date of about 1891 falls the year after the main house was finished and matches the year the long storehouse was repaired.
Seeing the Front Gate
The Tada Family Residence Front Gate faces the road to the south and is one of the easiest of the 18 structures to see from outside. No public openings had been announced as of September 2026, though, so treat the space inside the gate as private and view it from the road.
