About the Tada Family Residence Stone Wall
The Tada Family Residence Stone Wall (多田家住宅石塀, Tada-ke Jūtaku Ishibei) is a stone boundary wall built around 1933 in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives its total length as 47.8 meters in its description and 48 meters in the structure field of its database.
It lies along the west part of the south side of the estate, running east and west from both sides of the front gate and turning corners as it goes. Most of the face the estate shows to the street is this wall.
Three Layers of Stone
The Tada Stone Wall is built in 3 layers. At the bottom is a retaining course of rough natural stone; on that, a course of flat stones laid lengthwise; and on top, blocks dressed in the Edo-kiri manner.
Edo-kiri dressing trims a narrow band round the edge of each stone face and leaves the center slightly raised, so every joint shows as a crisp line. The finish gets finer as the wall rises, from rough fieldstone to neatly cut blocks.
5 Courses by the Gate, 3 Along the Road
The number of dressed courses changes along the Tada Family Residence Stone Wall: 5 on either side of the front gate, 3 along the street. Raising the wall only around the gate makes the entrance stand out.
The wall and the front gate of about 1891 are some 40 years apart. When the approach was reworked in the early Showa years, the heights seem to have been set to frame the older gate.
Why It Was Registered
The Stone Wall qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency says it gives the estate the dignified bearing of an old family.
Seeing the Stone Wall
The Tada Family Residence Stone Wall runs along the road to the south and is one of the easiest of the 18 structures to see. The change from 5 courses to 3 and the sharp joints of the Edo-kiri stones are details you can pick out from the road. No public openings had been announced as of September 2026, so stay off the grounds and view it from the street. There is no guidance on photography.
