About the Tada Family Residence Detached House and Connecting Corridor
The Tada Family Residence Detached House and Connecting Corridor (多田家住宅離れ及び渡廊下, Tada-ke Jūtaku Hanare oyobi Watari-rōka) is a guest pavilion built in 1902, with the covered corridor that links it to the main house, in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture. It was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. The pavilion is a single-story timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 100 square meters.
The pavilion and corridor are registered as a single entry. The idea is simple: put the best reception room some distance from the everyday household and join the two with a roofed walkway. Together they take up the southeast part of the estate.
Over the Arched Bridge
The corridor leaves the southeast corner of the main house and runs along the south edge of the grounds. Partway along it rises over an arched taikobashi bridge, and the pavilion lies beyond. That short climb and descent works as a threshold between family life and the space for guests.
Seen from the garden, the bridge becomes part of the view. The Tada Detached House was designed not only as a building but as a route leading to it.
Rails, Verandas and a View
The pavilion has a hipped roof of pantiles. A veranda with a balustrade wraps the garden side, and a broad veranda on the south looks out over the village of Moriyama, a sign that the estate sits a step above its neighbors.
The decorative alcove of the main room uses choice timber, and the rafters under the eaves are laid as Ōgidaruki, fanning out toward the corners instead of running parallel. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the Tada Family Residence Detached House and Connecting Corridor elegant and open.
Why It Was Registered
The Detached House qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape. Added 12 years after the main house of 1890 as a separate room for receiving guests, it shows how a well-off rural family arranged its hospitality in the late Meiji years.
Where the main house is closed and weighty, the Tada Detached House opens to the garden and the view. Two very different kinds of living space side by side is what gives this part of the estate its interest.
Seeing the Detached House
The Tada Family Residence Detached House and Connecting Corridor lies toward the south edge of the grounds, but how much of it can be seen from the road has not been confirmed. No public openings had been announced as of September 2026, so there is currently no chance to see the arched bridge or fan rafters up close.
