About the Tada Family Residence Archery Hall
The Tada Family Residence Archery Hall (多田家住宅弓道場, Tada-ke Jūtaku Kyūdōjō) is a private hall for kyūdō, Japanese archery, built around 1933 in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. It is a single-story timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 22 square meters.
It stands just east of the north storehouse, facing east.
A Shooting Floor and a Four-Mat Anteroom
Inside, the north half is a wooden-floored shai, the place where the archer stands to shoot, and the south side is a 4-mat anteroom with a kamidana, a Shinto household altar. Archers commonly bow toward such an altar before shooting, and even this small hall is laid out to allow for that.
Shooting, waiting and paying respects are all fitted into the 22 square meters of the Tada Archery Hall.
Eaves on Three Sides and Glazed Windows
The Tada Family Residence Archery Hall measures 5.0 by 4.3 meters, under a gabled kirizuma roof of pantiles, with eaves carried round 3 sides and glazed windows on the southeast.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it light and airy. Among the heavy clay-walled storehouses of the northeast corner, a building with projecting eaves and plenty of glass stands out.
Facing the Target House
Across from the east-facing front of the Tada Family Residence Archery Hall stands the target house, facing west. That is where the targets were set, and the two buildings together form a single range. The target house also dates from about 1933 and is registered as a separate entry.
Having both a shooting hall and a target house on the grounds, and having both survive, says something about how an old rural family spent its leisure in the early Showa years.
Why It Was Registered, and Seeing It
The Archery Hall qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape; the Agency values it as an archery hall surviving within a family estate.
The Tada Family Residence Archery Hall is in the northeast part of the grounds beside the north storehouse and cannot be seen from the road to the south.
