About the Tada Family Residence Front Storehouse
The Tada Family Residence Front Storehouse (多田家住宅前ノ蔵, Tada-ke Jūtaku Mae-no-kura) is a clay-walled storehouse built in 1870 in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. Built in the dozo manner, it is mostly single-story with a partial 2nd floor, has a tiled roof and covers 40 square meters.
As its name says, it stands at the front of the estate, against the west side of the main house, with its ridge running east to west. Only the late Edo long storehouse is older, and it predates the present main house of 1890 by 20 years.
Quince-Shaped Windows with Copper Shutters
The walls of the Tada Front Storehouse are finished in lime plaster, with Namako-kabe around the base: square tiles fixed to the wall with raised plaster joints, a finish that protects the lower wall from rain and knocks and gives the storehouse its gray-and-white lattice.
The small windows are framed in the mokkō (木瓜) shape, four joined curves often seen in family crests, and hung with copper shutters, each under a little plastered hood. Decoration of this kind on the windows of a working storehouse is what rewards a close look.
Size and Form
The Tada Family Residence Front Storehouse measures 7.9 meters by 5.1 meters, under a gabled kirizuma roof of pantiles. Its door is on the east side, facing the main house. Part of it rises to a 2nd floor, so it stands taller than a single-story storehouse.
Why It Was Registered
The Front Storehouse qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that together with the main house it makes an imposing front.
When the main house went up in 1890, this storehouse had already stood here for 20 years. The new house was built snug against its east side, and the pairing of white plaster and tiled lower walls became the face of the Tada estate.
Seeing the Front Storehouse
The Tada Family Residence Front Storehouse is on the front side of the estate, west of the main house, but how much of it shows over the stone wall from the road to the south has not been checked. No public openings had been announced as of September 2026, and there is currently no way to see the quince-shaped windows up close. There is no guidance on photography.
