About the Tada Family Residence Barn
The Tada Family Residence Barn (多田家住宅納屋, Tada-ke Jūtaku Naya) is a farm outbuilding built around 1933 in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. It is a single-story timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 19 square meters.
It stands in the back garden northwest of the main house, facing north.
A Barn 1.9 Meters Deep
The Tada Barn measures 10.1 meters long but only 1.9 meters deep, an unusually narrow building. It has a single-pitch roof with a Maneki-yane, a short extra slope on the other side, laid with pantiles.
Inside, it is divided east to west into 4 rooms, and the east end is a toilet. Many small compartments suit a building for sorting tools, firewood and supplies by kind.
A Wall and a Building in One
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the south face of the Tada Family Residence Barn is designed as one piece with the earthen wall running east and west. From the back garden, the barn wall and the boundary wall continue without a break, so the building reads as part of the enclosure. Part of the north face is boarded.
Merging a long, thin barn with the wall puts the line that closes off the back garden and the storage it needed into a single structure.
Why It Was Registered
The Barn qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape. It is one of the outbuildings put up around 1933 when the north side of the estate was reorganized, and with the warehouse next door and the lumber storehouse in the northwest corner it frames the back garden.
Seeing the Barn
The Tada Family Residence Barn stands in the back garden at the northwest of the estate, out of sight from the road to the south. No public openings had been announced as of September 2026, and there is no guidance on photography. Directions are on the Tada Family Residence (Chikuzen) page.
