About the Tada Family Residence Lumber Storehouse
The Tada Family Residence Lumber Storehouse (多田家住宅材木蔵, Tada-ke Jūtaku Zaimokugura) is a storehouse of about 1933 in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. It is single-story, partly clay-walled and partly timber, with a tiled roof and a building area of 102 square meters.
It stands at the north end of the estate's west boundary, ridge running north to south, a large store that closes off the back of the property.
Timber at One End, Firewood at the Other
The Tada Lumber Storehouse is split in two. The southern half, with thick clay walls, held timber; the northern half, built of wood, held firewood. Building timber for construction and repairs sat at one end, and wood for cooking and the bath at the other.
Timber had to be kept safe from fire and damp, so it got heavy earthen walls. Firewood needed air and easy access, so it got a timber shed. Seen that way, the split makes sense.
Two Roofs and Two Kinds of Wall
The roof of the Tada Family Residence Lumber Storehouse is stepped, each half under its own gabled kirizuma roof of pantiles, with a lean-to along the east side.
The walls change too. The timber store is finished in white lime plaster over a namako tile base, while the firewood store is left at the earthen second coat, without the final plaster. Two roof heights and a switch from white to earth-colored wall on one building are the things to look for.
Why It Was Registered
The Lumber Storehouse qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it a large storehouse that shapes the view of the estate from the rear. With the warehouse and barn to its south, it completes the northwest corner of the property.
Seeing the Lumber Storehouse
The Tada Family Residence Lumber Storehouse is in the northwest corner and cannot be seen from the road to the south; whether it shows from outside the west boundary has not been confirmed.
